Many people believe leadership begins when someone gives you a title. At The Folding Chair Collective, we believe it begins much earlier. Leadership starts the moment you decide to take responsibility for your influence. Whether you’re mentoring a student, facilitating a meeting, creating policy, supporting your team, or simply deciding how you’ll respond during a difficult conversation; you are leading.

The question isn’t whether you’re a leader. It’s what kind of leader your decisions are creating.

Dr. Major is amazing - I highly recommend booking a session with her - she just genuinely cares, understands the struggles black women experience in higher ed and wants to provide support. I'm experiencing a lack of mentorship in my program, and in one session Dr. Major filled a lot of those gaps. She provided emotional support as well as academic support by listening to my struggles, validating me, encouraging, affirming me and offering to continue helping me beyond our session, she offered to look over my work and provide feedback and she is developing a resource hub that she shared with me to help me get my methods all the way together.

She was a great listener, very knowledgeable, and thoughtful in her delivery that acknowledged my feelings and at the conclusion of the consultation, I felt empowered to move forward on this journey as others have faced similar challenges, but I don’t have to embark on it alone, as folding chair collective is there to support me!

While I initially reached out to her for help with my research methods course, she quickly identified some overarching issues and cut to the crux of what it means to join the 2% as a Black woman. She is both academically sound and a true champion for the Black doctoral journey.
